Planted

"Invest in the millennium.  Plant sequoias," writes the mad farmer Wendell Berry in his manifesto.  Planting things, sequoias or otherwise, is a sign of rootedness and hope.  In this spring season of planning and planting, how are you thinking about rootedness in the coming year?  What are your plans for your garden -- and your place?

Getting Organized

The word “organizing” might conjure up the rearranging of an exploding closet into neat stacks and rows or the filing of a desk full of flying papers.  But it also refers to a group of people collaborating and strategizing to meet a specific goal.  This issue will contain stories, models and heroes for both kinds of organizing—and if we’re lucky, maybe even make some creative connections between the two.

Taboo: Sex(uality)

In our churches, in our families, in our neighborhood, in our friend groups, certain topics like - - - - - and - - - - - are off-limits, whether explicitly or implicitly.  Why are we reluctant to discuss - - - - - in these settings and what are the ripple effects?  A follow-up to the general taboo issue to focus specifically on of sex and sexuality.

Good Books 2

Have you ever gotten to the end of a good novel and felt a sense of grief at having to say goodbye to the world and the characters contained between the covers? Is there one book you wish everyone you know could read and love as much as you do? On the good books that become part of our own stories.

Living on Less

Throughout much of the world, winter strips away many signs of life and calls us to remember that summer’s abundance does not exist all the time, everywhere, for all people.  By choice or by circumstance, some live on less all year round.  What does simplicity look like in your life?
