Art & Design

Heirloom

Take an object of negligible value and attach a great-great-grandparent to it and you have an article of infinite value -- in some cases.  On the things we hold dear, and the things that lose their luster between generations.

Words

Language is a complicated thing.  It can clarify and obfuscate, it can heal and wound, it can educate and confuse.  This collection explores the words that have stuck with us, for whatever reason.

Bloom

In some parts of the U.S., Mother’s Day is used as a marker for the last frost and then it’s safe to put plants in the ground outdoors, but gardening is much more than just putting a plant in the soil, both before and after the last frost date.  On the lessons we learn from growing things.

Making Art

It’s a common story: a student graduates from college with a degree in the arts and quickly realizes how difficult it is to carve out time and money to continue making art.  In fact, this challenge is common for artists of all ages, in all media.  On the challenges and strategies related to cultivating a creative life.

Books that Stick

Many of us could tell our life stories specifically through the lens of books we’ve read.  Instead of doing a summer issue on beach reads, which certainly have their place, we’re going to kick off our annual August publishing break with reflections on the books that have changed our lives in some way, whether fiction or non-fiction, poetry or reference, fantastical or biographical.

Clothe Yourself

Clothe yourself with humility, with kindness, with righteousness -- the Bible is chock full of good fashion advice for things you can't actually wear. Or can you? What do sweaters and jeans and scarves and hats have to do with our more abstract values?

Classified

Jumping off the "Print" issue of catapult, this collection of fiction invites contributors to a unique, creative challenge: find a classified ad in your local newspaper and create a short story or a work of visual art based on that ad.  What do we see when we read between the lines?

Print

The local newspaper, an endangered species of late, has been a critical chronicler of places around the world, recording the life of many communities in a way no history book ever would.  What is the role of print journalism in your community, and in society at large?  Beyond journalism, what is the role of books in a digital age?

(In)Efficiency

The Industrial Revolution may have given us a gazillion useful objects, but it also radically re-shaped our expectations about human purpose and the use of time.  When has efficiency improved your life in a meaningful way?  When has inefficiency been the better way?

The 100-Mile Imagination

There's an infinitely interesting relationship between place and imagination. How has our work, art, leisure, storytelling and eating been shaped by the places in which we live--and how have these activities shaped our places? What about our hopes and fears?
