Kept objects

I keep a demon in my closet.

Tucked in the depths of the closet in my spare bedroom is a worn light blue jean jacket.  It is, as far as clothes go, not even a particularly good quality example of the styles of the 1980s.  It was always a bit too cute, with its gathering at the tops of the arms and its fuller sleeves.  Its snaps had the annoying habit of popping open even when the jacket was new.  The reason that I keep it is because of what I did to that jacket.  On the back in permanent marker I had drawn my best interpretation of a biker logo.  In gold and red and black inks, with amazing expression, I had drawn a demon, complete with horns and a pointed tail; tongue lolling out of its mouth.  But above the demon I had drawn a big cross, tipped at such an angle that the demon would have only a brief moment of recognition before being conked soundly on the top of his head.  "Jesus Rules, Satan Fools" the logo on the jacket boldly announces.   When I look at that jacket now, I am reminded of the younger version of myself, incredibly earnest and bold. When I donned that jacket, I wasn't afraid to be viewed as slightly odd for the sake of my message for Christ.  Holding it, I am reminded, inspired and challenged by my own past.  And that seems to me a very good reason to keep the thing.
