Kept objects

I keep a reminder of unexpressed gratitude.

In December of 1980 my grandfather, Pete Frolander, went to his chair in the living room after lunch. Around his feet were gathered simple wooden clocks he had been working on for Christmas. He was almost finished with them; all they needed were the hours attached to the faces.  A few minutes later my grandmother, Zella, found him dead with a clock in his lap. In a panic, she called my mother who drove the thirty-six miles to their house as quickly as she could. When Mom arrived, the ambulance was carrying Grandma out of the house on a stretcher. She had also died, of shock. One of those clocks was to be a gift for me. I never had a chance to thank him for the clock that still hangs in my breakfast nook or the way he loved me when I was a child.
