Alright, this is a last-ditch attempt to help out my church. Our fellowship team got it in their minds to produce a low-quality photo directory by taking pics with someone’s digital camera and giving them to me to layout and then simply photocopy (which will ensure that ANYTHING decent ends up looking like crap).

Well, my best attempts to get them to take high-res pictures failed and now I’m stuck with those awful 20×16″ jpegs so many digital camera users take. My efforts thus far to make them look like anything decent have not worked. Is anyone out their savvy with graphic programs, namely Quark and Photoshop? Better yet, any bright ideas as to how I can improve this project without breaking the news to them that they need to start over? I suspect this project is destined to look like crap no matter what. I’m just hoping someone out there knows more than I do (a rarity, but I’m open to the possibility – HA HA!).

a few questions:
[ul]
[li]how many copies are you making?
[li]what resolution are the pictures you’ve been given?
[li]how much do you like your church?
[/ul]
and now a few answers:
[ul]
[li]if you’re only doing, say, 100 copies, you could try to print them on something yourself—like a laser printer or deskjet—instead of photocopying them. we just finished printing 100 copies of *cino’s 16 page newsletter (1 page = 1/2 8.5×11 sheet, so about 900 sheets) on our little inkjet and it held up admirably. it also did a heck of a lot better job than a copy machine would have. budget printing at its most budgeted.
[li]i’m sure you know this already, but . . . if you’ve got crap to start with (the photos), the best you can end up with is crap souffle. if the resolution isn’t up to snuff, there isn’t much you can do. however, if the resolution is okay, see above. printing on something other than a copy machine will make the photos look decent.
[li]just wondering.
[/ul]
did i give you any answers to any questions at all? or did i go the wrong way with what you were asking for?

All in all, this will probably be a 6-10 page document, copied 100 or more times. Do I feel like subjecting my laserjet to this? Not really. The resolution is 72 dpi at worst and actually I just got a batch on CD that aren’t so bad.

Yes, when given crap, make crap souffle. Whip, whip, whip!
