Is anyone else in the path of the hurricane?
I’ve never been in a hurricane before.

I think it’s supposed to affect areas south of New York City the most, but I think we’ll definitely see some action. Long Island will probably get it more than us. Just to be safe, I’m strapping myself to a tree.

Is DC going to be hit?

Sounds like it. There’s talk of a coup here at work so we don’t have to come in. Places around have pre-emptively declared states of emergency.

I think the latest estimate is to expect a dumping of rain and 60-70 mph sustained winds (getting up to 110 mph at times).

I’m afraid my car is going to get blown away—it’s very tiny and barely goes 70 itself at the best of times.

Actually people here in Toronto keep saying we’re going to get hit too, which I find an absurd prospect. They seem bent on using the term"hurricane" although I would think that by the time it reaches this far inland that it would cease to be a hurricane. Anyway, I plan to sit outside on a lawnchair when it hits just to prove its not a big a deal as everyone here is making it out to be. I wouldn’t suggest Laryn do that. Or if you do, please videotape it.

I’d pay a dollar to see that video.

I must apologize for my “inlander” of a husband. If I’ve seen one hurricane, I’ve seen ‘em all. People are all talk. Usually what happens is that a few pine cones fall of one old tree that wobbles when a dog pees on it. As much as Laryn likes to fantasize about Tank taking flight, I’m afraid I must be the voice of reason. Anyone looking for a show should turn to other venues.

how’d you fare in toronto?

i have to admit it wasn’t near as impressive as i had made it out to be in my mind—it was windy and rainy, but not really more than other storms i’ve seen. we did lose power for a while and got to miss a day and a half of work.

i have to agree with laryn. dc did not get hit very hard. we (the american studies program) never lost power despite prayers to lose power to put off writing a paper, but we only had a 17 hour delay. i have to say that the winds were worse in northwest iowa than they were at 1am on thursday night. i am way disappointed in this whole hurricane thing.

Friday was the day the hurricane hit Toronto. And by hurricane, I mean a light rain. So much for the apocolypse…
