Hey friends.

yeah. Leonard Cohen. He is a good guy. Kind of weird in real life. Not that I know him,but I know of him. He is kind of a canadian celebrity of sorts and gets a bit more attention in the media up there than down here. But, yes, his music is really haunting and dark in a lot of ways. His poetry is the same way. Very intense. very sensual and sexual and not always so normal, if you know what I mean. cheers

I just discovered Leonard Cohen. I bought his early “best of” album, which seems to be easily found at the bottom of the NICE PRICE record bin, which is a shame. I LOVE it. It really gets at little subtle things like the life of the mind, personality, and sexuality in ways I’ve never heard before. Is anyone else a fan, and could you recommend any particular albums?

i also found the early “best of” in the bargain bin and i think it’s just fantastic.

last year on a camping trip, several of us listened to some tracks off of “tower of fire,” which is a tribute to leonard cohen. bono does a song on there, but i can’t remember anyone else on it. it was definitely one of the better tribute albums i’ve heard.

I was browsing the music category to see if anyone had posted something else, and found this old thread. I’m a pretty big fan of Leonard Cohen—the album you got is a good one. Other personal favorites include:

Album: Ten New Songs —very good
The Future —good

Songs: (besides the songs on the above two albums) Hallelujah (this is the one Bono sings on the tribute album by the way), First we take manhattan

Jason,

Sounds like you would have loved One Yellow Rabbit Theatre’s production called “Doing Leonard Cohen”. The first act consisted of choreographed adaptations of his poetry, ending with Suzanne. They really captured Cohen’s irreverence and sense of humour, as well as the beauty of his work. The second act, less successful, was an adaptation of his novel, Beautiful Losers.

I take it that those of you who are recently discovering Mr. Cohen are not familiar with the Pump Up The Volume soundtrack…Hollywoods introduction of LC to the US.

I’m not really “discovering” Mr. Cohen, but I’m not that familiar with that soundtrack.. I did grow up in Canada, though, if that’s an excuse. :)

He is an intriguing individual.
