eddie mentioned in another thread that he was a musician. and that got me thinking about how many other musicians we have in our community here. so, who here is a musician? what do you play? do you play in a band?

i’ll start, i suppose. i play a number of instruments, most notably guitar. i’ve been playing guitar since eighth grade and i think i might finally be developing some talent. i’ve played in a number of bands, including a punk band in high school (a bunch of white, suburban, private school kids trying to figure out what we were mad about) and a they might be giants-like band in college (books & comics — i think jason mentioned it in another thread).

i’m not playing in a band at the moment, outside of church worship settings, but i am working on a number of songs in the hope that i may record them someday.

okay. your turn . . .

I also am A musician, I play several instruments, mainly guitar, but also bass and mandolin and harmonica and trombone. I was in a number of bands in high school that never progressed beyond the formulation stage, so I started playing on my own and writing my own music. In college i now play bass in a band and guitar in a praise team, as well as continuing the singer-songwriter kind of thing. In fact, (here comes a plug) last summer i recorded a bunch of my stuff in my basement and made it into a CD. If you’re interested, you can listen to some audio samples from it here: http://homepages.dordt.edu/~jckmtmn/

Can I put a plug into Ethan’s plug? I own his CD. I like it.

You should own it too. You’ll like it too.

good idea. bring the musicians out in the light so they can find eachother and perhaps collaborate some day.

I have been singing and playing rhythm guitar for about eight years. I was in a U2ish/experimental rock band in college and am currently trying to finish a second album with one of the founding members of that band (*cino’s very own “joelspace”) in college. The last few years, we have joined the many who now write, record and produce their own material on Digital Performer/Pro Tools etc. in the privacy of their own homes. Our process is similar to that of NIN, Bjork, Beck, Wu-Tang but we are eager to work as a band in the ways of the Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys, hot hot heat etc.

Our aim with the new album is to use current technology as a rock instrument rather than as a way of cleaning up and washing out all humanness and error. Error and mistakes are the very foundation for discovery, so we leave room for as much of it as possible. Our goal is to form a band of people who are patient enough to capture a broad range of emotions within the rock spirit. Our greatest challenge has been to find a drummer with both a radical vision for what could pass as Christian music and a musical sensibility similar to our own.

Ok, my turn. I am a musician. However, you probably won’t be jumping at the chance to collaborate with me, as I play classical piano and have never, ever been in a band. I do have a CD though…(recorded by *cino’s very own joelspace)…and I suppose I could sell it if anyone is DYING to hear my master’s degree recital. (ha.)

I also play violin, organ, and minimal guitar (C, D, G, e minor…)

I play nothing. There’s a lot about music I don’t get. People who “get” music and can play it still amaze me.

I have a question in general but pointed more at Rob and Kirsten… yeah, I’m talking to you: How viable is it for people to submit things like music or video files to be posted in the the *cino gallery? I’d like to hear people’s music.

Kristinmarie,

With the C,D,G and e minor you can pretty much play most anything in the Rock genre. Don’t say minimal. To present standards you are quite accomplished.

The truth is I play guitar (and a bit of the other rock n roll tools) but, have found myself much more comfortable behind a board in recent years. I don’t miss the road, the smelly bars, or the incessant fighting/drama between band members. I do miss the performance and the stage and, more importantly, I miss the passionate human interaction between the musicians and the audience.
