I’ll be there in a week and a half. What should I see? And where’s your bookstore? I’ll visit!

lennex ray!!! We meet again! Good to see you here.

So, on topic: has anyone experienced any remarkable theatre performances lately. It’s been weeks since I’ve seen a show and I’m frustrated so I’ve decided to make my own dang play.

The new project is titled (a) life in 40 acts and is currently in pre-production. Sort of a sequel or companion piece to NOBODY MOVE AND NOBODY GETS HURT!!!

lennex knows the score.

“Nobody Move” has made me a nationally-known playwright…so fill us in on “40 Acts”
…and consider moving to this mountain town where there is no lack of culture – in all shapes, sizes, and sexual orientation.
Seriously, the theatre community is alive and well here!

Internationally known, Liv! Since most of our tour dates last Spring were in Ontario, Canada, I believe you now qualify as world famous. I will consider moving to your town.

More on 40 acts later.

(a) life in 40 acts is the new play I’m working on in my “spare” time. I won’t be able to explain it fully, since much of it hasn’t been written yet. My cast is (for those to whom this will mean anything):

Lindsay De Wit
Maygann Mc Carthy
Ann Du Mez
Laura Groen
Adam Smit
Bob Taylor
Eric Van Wyk and
Amy Vroom

Together we’re making a play. I can’t say for sure what it’s about.

We have a rigid structure to work with: Two PARTS with 20 ACTS in each PART. 40 ACTS in the whole PLAY. Each ACT in the first PART is on a different subject. Maybe loneliness, dependance, joy, sex, infancy…something like that. The stuff of life. Each ACT in the first PART will have a linking PLAY in the second PART. They will link by a common element: subject matter, phrase, image, movement, etc…

ACT I will link with ACT XL
ACT II with ACT XXXIX
ACT III with ACT XXXVIII
ACT IV with ACT XXXVII
and so on.

The individual actors won’t be playing the same characters the whole way through the play. In fact, most of the time they won’t play characters at all. It’s more like vaudeville or dance or (and I hate this term) “performance art”. But really it’s just theatre.

Again, it’s still in early stages of development, so I’ll keep you posted on its progress!

That sounds interesting. I’ll book you in Lafayette when you go on the world tour. Perhaps a frat bar?

Its good to hear that someone is screwing around with the structure of theater. We just had a version of Tempest (purdue) that totally flopped. Lost 11,000$. The audience consisted of the theater students that weren’t in the play and people over 50 years of age. Perhaps theater needs a revolution of sorts. Why should we keep doing Shakespeare if fewer and fewer people are getting it? Perhaps theater should be done for the process itself?
